Weight
The one thing that a lot of people get wrong is body weight. You can spend thousands of pounds on a set of wheels that will shave off 200g but if you’ve got a stone to shift then you’re shooting yourself in the foot.
It does make a big difference. I remember when I was in the Academy, I was doing everything right but I just wasn’t getting over the hills and Rod Ellingworth said maybe I should drop a bit of weight.
When you weigh 76kg you might think, “what’s three kilos?”, but it’s the equivalent of having six normal sized water bottles in your back pockets.
When Rod put it like that I realised it was significant, so I dropped three kilos and suddenly I was getting over the climbs no problem. But then it’s catch 22, I thought I’d try and drop another three kilos but I lost all power so it’s all about finding the right balance.
