Schwalbe G-One Speed tyres

If you like road riding and gravel grinding in equal measure, these are the tyres for you

We thought you had to be a certain football manager to be dubbed ‘The Special One’, but Schwalbe have seen fit to apply the moniker to its superbly versatile G-One Speed tyre.

That’s because the G-One Speed is a tyre ready to tackle anything you might want to throw at it, from the road to rough gravel and everything in between. In keeping with Schwalbe’s desire to push tubeless technology, the G-Ones are designed primarily for use without a tube – although of course, if you wanted to run them with tubes then that’s fine too.

Measuring 30mm in width, there’s an awful lot of comfort to be extracted from the G-One Speeds, and with optimal operating pressure of between 50-80psi, you can really take them where no road tyre has previously dared to go.

The OneStar version of Schwalbe’s Triple Star compound provides impressively low rolling resistance thanks to its three-fold construction, so the tyres are fit to pound the blacktop without feeling like a pair of wellies. Think of them as the equivalent of industrial steel toe-capped boots… that could still take on a running race.

The double edge of this sword is grip – mountains of it. You’re able to really attack into fast sweeping corners thanks to the rubber compound, with the tightly-packed knobbled tread doing a great job of maintaining adhesion to the road, or lack thereof when you take the tyres onto gravel or dirt tracks. It’s a compound that feels particularly soft to touch, so even when things get greasy or broken, there’s an element of compliance that helps the tyre bite into whatever surface you’ve taken your road bike to.

Schwalbe call the tubeless tech ‘Microskin’, and claim a lighter construction than previous iterations, improved cut resistance and improved rolling resistance among its main benefits.

The sidewalls are also fortified with Snakeskin technology, which boosts cut resistance from non-direct impacts, which is perfect for when you’re traversing off the beaten track, while the German brand’s V-Guard puncture protection fabric layer is also integrated into the construction of the tyre.

Add in the fact that Schwalbe’s Tubeless Easy tech makes installing them to necessarily tight rims almost as easy as a standard clincher, and this is quite possibly the best – and most versatile – gravel-road tyre on the market today.
